Vocab Pear ("the app", "we", "us") is a vocabulary‑building app for iPhone and iPad. We built it to respect your privacy. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have. By using Vocab Pear, you agree to the practices described here.
We want to be direct: we do not operate servers that store your data, and we do not run any analytics, advertising, or tracking. Specifically, Vocab Pear does not:
The words you save, their definitions, translations, and the dates you added them are stored locally on your device using Apple's standard on‑device storage. This information is not uploaded to us or to any third party. If you delete the app, this data is removed from your device along with it.
Vocab Pear includes a built‑in offline dictionary (based on Princeton WordNet) stored on your device. The large majority of words are defined entirely on‑device, and nothing leaves your device for those look‑ups.
If a word is not found in the offline dictionary, Vocab Pear sends that single word to the Merriam‑Webster Dictionary API (operated by Merriam‑Webster Inc.) to retrieve a definition. Only the word itself is transmitted. We do not attach your name, account, device identifiers, or any other personal information to this request. Merriam‑Webster's handling of these requests is governed by its own privacy policy, available at merriam-webster.com/legal/privacy-policy.
If you use the scanning feature, Vocab Pear accesses your camera (with your permission) so you can capture text. Text recognition is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. Images you capture are processed locally to detect words and are not stored by the app or uploaded to us or anyone else.
If you enable a second language, translations are generated on your device using Apple's built‑in Translation framework. Your device may download language packs from Apple to make this work offline. We do not send your words to any translation server of ours.
The "speak" feature uses Apple's on‑device speech synthesis to read words aloud. No audio or text is sent to us.
Vocab Pear does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. Because the app collects no personal data and requires no account, it is suitable for general audiences. Dictionary definitions come from a comprehensive reference source and may occasionally include mature word meanings.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your information. The only sharing that occurs is the transmission of an individual look‑up word to the dictionary service described in Section 4, solely so that we can return its definition to you.
Network requests for definitions are made over encrypted HTTPS connections. Because your vocabulary lives on your device, its security is also protected by your device's passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID.
